Overview

The gas flows in and around galaxies are increasingly recognised as a key driver of galaxy growth from early epochs until today.   Gas originates in the intergalactic medium, flows through the circumgalactic medium in galactic halos, and finally accretes onto the interstellar medium, within which star formation and black hole activity drive massive outflows of gas back into the CGM and IGM.   A holistic approach towards understanding the interconnection between these gaseous reservoirs within the cosmic ecosystem is crucial for understanding galaxy and global baryon evolution.

This meeting aims to bring together observers and modelers working on the IGM, CGM, and ISM, in order to promote an exchange of information and ideas among these traditionally disparate fields.  Topics include characterising inflowing and outflowing gas around star-forming galaxies, tracing metals and feedback energy through ISM/CGM/IGM interfaces, examining the enrichment and energetics of hot gas around massive early-type galaxies, and understanding how these processes manifest in multi-phase gas properties across cosmic time.  Of particular focus will be how to use forefront telescopes such as ALMA, MeerKAT/SKA, and X-ray facilities to optimally constrain the baryon cycle via direct multi-wavelength measurements of galaxy, CGM, and ICM gas properties.

This is the fourth in a series of workshops sponsored by the Centre for Extragalactic Theory based in Cape Town, South Africa.  This one, like the previous two, will be held at the popular Protea Hotel Kruger Gate, at the entrance to Kruger Park, one of the premier game reserves in the world featuring South Africa's famous Big Five
